Navigating Division in Today's Society: Elevating Consciousness

The consciousness of the United States is trending lower, feeding anger and conflict.   A recent email about politics read, “Read this, and your blood will boil.”

I thought to myself, why would I want to read that? I surely don't want my blood to boil!

But I wondered how many people would open it, read it, forward it, and spread the anger.   Maybe the feeling of anger reminds them of their aliveness and gives them some emotion to remove them from the doldrums.

The politics of the country divide. The news agencies, if you can call them that anymore, make money on division.  They are in effect, feeding our ego’s.   The ego exists on dualism and division. The ego needs to draw contrasts and judge to feel power and justified in taking charge of your consciousness; for example, this caused that  so now you have permission to  blame, shame, and draw distinctions.   In moments like this, as the collective ego of the society rises and thus drives division, anger, and hate.   We all have an ego, and reading articles that make your blood boil feeds it, and if we are not aware of our state of consciousness, our ego can lead us down a dangerous path.   Jesus and Buddha both had been quoted as saying, "Forgive them, for they know not what they do." These phrases evidence the unawareness level any of us can enter into when allowing the ego to take over.

Through the space created in meditation, prayer, and actives like yoga,  the thoughts of the mind become apparent, as does the work of the ego.   As the ego becomes visible, we can have compassion for ourselves, knowing that all of us share this ego trait or episodic ego driven consciousness, the egoic tendencies that drive pride, negative thoughts about self and others, selfishness, easily angered and quick to hatred.   By viewing it from a higher level of consciousness, we can remember that we are not the ego but the ego is part of us.  We are reminded that we are a spiritual being having a human experience, allowing compassion for ourselves and forgiving ourselves and others.

After all,  we are all the same types of beings having the same experience, and in the end, knowing we will all return to Spirit.  By developing a practice of mediation, prayer and controlling what enters the mind, and tracking or becoming conscious of your energy states, you can foster a more harmonious and compassionate state and additionally shift the consciousness of your family, your practice, and your society.

The Schuster Center for Professional Development holds that by following our curriculum, and satisfying the human needs of the doctor, and by satisfying the successive needs of the practice, the entire complex has the ability to shift to higher levels of consciousness, and the potential to achieve full potential.

In a world inundated with discord and ego-driven conflicts, it is imperative that we embrace a more enlightened way of being.  In the end, when we are fighting amongst each other, we are fighting with ourselves.
